Welcome to the official site of the City of Milledgeville, Georgia with an estimated population of 20,000.
Did you know that our city has a unique and distinguished history as one of only two planned capital
cities in the United States? It's true. In 1803 the City of Milledgeville was "laid out" on the
banks of the Oconee River and established as the capital of Georgia. Milledgeville remained our capital city
throughout the Civil War, until the capital was relocated to Atlanta in 1868.
Today, our city remains in many ways vibrant and visionary. We serve as home to two great institutions
of higher
learning: Georgia Military College and Georgia College and State University. Additionally, Milledgeville has
emerged as a regional center for retailing, health care, state government agencies, manufacturing,
and financial services.
We look forward to meeting you personally in the near future. In the meantime, feel encouraged to call
on us if we can be of assistance in any way.
